Early game the mercenary contract alone can pay for your whole army (50-75 troops.), again if not using a stack of t5 troops just from killing bandits. Get's much higher if you beat lords down. Once you can win verses lords the best part about the contract is that it lets you battle with their enemies. 10-15k from loot + ransoms on average Battanian = fian champions in vast numbers with a (15-20) strong group of cav to screen enemy cav and help the archers maintain distance from infantry. Scale up as needed. Use a companion to field another group heavy with infantry or whatever you need more of and always have them in your army for 0 influence. Nope but if you go to war with the faction that owns the city your workshop is in then poof you lost it. It makes owning workshops when you are being a mercenary more challenging for sure. 2.
