There's no way to unlock masteries without starting the expansion. If you're doing to start one, PoF is the one to start. If you do you'll end up having a basic raptor mount, but you won't have to use it. In my opinion the PoF story is fewer and less important spoilers over all. 4. You'd need Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire to get the Living World seasons that matter (3,4, and 5). Season 2 is just story. So we're lead to believe this game is free to play, but in reality its just another piece of crap trial version that pushes the "Buy our expansions" in your face 24/7, no matter what you try to do.
